When Douglas Adams author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was asked why he chose the number 42 he gave this answer: “The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one.”
Well I’m not so sure I believe him because when raindrops and sunlight embrace the sunlight bends then splits into every color of the spectrum. As it splits and exits the rain drop in all its wavelengths it does so at an angle of about, yes you guessed it, 42 degrees.
We call this a rainbow and when I was a kid I could make my own rainbow by using the hose or the sprinkler. The rainbow has seven colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet and if you did this six times then the answer is also 42. QED, Point Proven. That’s all.
PS This is my best phone pic of a double rainbow so far. (second one just visable)
Secondary rainbows are caused by a double reflection of sunlight inside the raindrops, and appear at an angle of 50°–53°. As a result of the second reflection, the colours of a secondary rainbow are inverted compared to the primary bow, with blue on the outside and red on the inside.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
