Just had a great visit to the Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo. about 400kms west of Sydney. It’s an open-range design, with the normal zoo walls and fences replaced by concealed moats which create the impression of actually being with the animals in the wild. We rode around on push bikes which really gave the full on outdoor experience.
Rhinoceros originated about fifty million years ago. An adult typically weighs from 800 to 1,400 kg (1,800 to 3,100 lb),
Their thick-layered skin helps to give them a form of protection. Black rhinos have poor eyesight and rely more on hearing and smell.
Here’s the Asian elephant. You can see it’s smaller than the African elephant.
The Asian water buffalo is a huge animal.
I love it, they call them Charismatic Megafauna. When they say this they are referring to the tiger which is the largest cat species sometimes having a total body length of up to 3.38 m (11.1 ft). They can weigh up to 388.7 kg (857 lb).
I really like their colour which is a pattern of dark vertical stripes on reddish-orange fur with a lighter underside.
The cheetah faster than any other land animal— as fast as 112 to 120 km/h and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds. By comparison the Ferrari F12 berlinetta can hit 62 mph in 3.1 seconds,
We had trouble finding the Lion. Turns out he was was hidden away at the back of the Zoo and for good reason.
Jan 2013 Lion kills intended love mate
Taronga Western Plains Zoo announced the tragic end to a mooted love match this week, and the sadness of staff at losing Kora.
Weeks of “visual and fence contact” between Kora and Lazarus had convinced keepers that they were ready to meet.
“Both animals were displaying the correct behaviours and getting along very well,” the zoo’s spokeswoman said. But a week after the magnificent cats were introduced, their promising relationship unravelled.
“Interactions between unrelated carnivores are known to be fraught with danger and can lead to injury or death in the wild,” the spokeswoman said.
“To our knowledge Lazarus had not done anything like this before.” Taronga Western Plains Zoo is searching for another mate for the 11-year-old lion. (sure hope they tell her)
Looks like Lion food to me.
The Galápagos tortoise. These guys really are giant, reaching weights of over 400 kg (880 lb) and lengths of over 1.8 meters (5.9 ft). With life spans in the wild of over 100 years, it is one of the longest-lived vertebrates.
OTHER FRIENDLY ANIMALS
0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than three seconds, we hope.
